Technical Specialist - Biology (PA) - 10-month

Location: Canandaigua, NY

The Technical Specialist will be responsible for the preparation of laboratory materials, care and maintenance of laboratory equipment and instruments, assist in inventory, ordering, supervision of equipment and supplies, assist in instruction, demonstrations and student projects. The Technical Specialist will also assist the Chairperson, supervise work-study students, and other department staff members with assigned tasks.

This is a 10-month position.

Qualifications:

Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology or closely related field.

Experience: Two years working in a biology lab. Proficiency in sterile technique, media
preparation and maintenance of microbiology stock cultures. Current knowledge and experience
troubleshooting lab equipment such as autoclaves, hoods, incubators, thermocyclers and
microscopes. Knowledge and experience with medical waste and EPA guideline procedures.

Special Skills: Training in Hazwoper-First on the scene awareness. Experience in laboratory
preparation.

Essential Functions:

  1. Completes tasks assigned by Chairperson.

  2. Prepares chemical and other solutions, biological supplies, culture materials, etc., for laboratory use and demonstrations as requested by faculty members.

  3. Coordinates all laboratory facilities and facilitate flow of lab supplies and equipment among labs.

  4. Maintains biological stock cultures.

  5. Prepares instruments and organize essential accessories and supplies for laboratory use.

  6. Maintains and cares for all science equipment.

  7. Assists in research for and development of new procedures for full utilization of instruments.

  8. Records supply needs and order at appropriate times all supplies and equipment for the department.

  9. Assists in preparation of the department budget.

  10. Maintains running inventory of all equipment and supplies for the department.

  11. Coordinates with the Information Technology department for the maintenance
    and updating of departmental laptops.

  12. Checks in all equipment and supplies, assess for any damages or mistakes and take proper measures to correct any errors.

  13. Supervises one or more work-study students.

  14. Assists other department members in maximum security of laboratory area.

  15. Records and reports damaged and lost (or stolen) equipment and supplies.

  16. Assists instructors in labs when requested.

  17. Assists students in labs for understanding of the laboratory material and proper use of equipment.

  18. Performs and/or assists in demonstrations in labs and classes.

  19. Assists students with projects that require use of lab equipment and supplies outside of regular laboratory periods.

  20. Instructs alone in laboratories or class when necessary under supervision of course instructor.

  21. Assists with outreach activities, including supporting visiting high school groups using FLCC labs and equipment.

Relationship:

  1. Reports to Chairperson, Department of Science/Technology.

  2. Works with department staff and students as assigned by Department Chairperson.

Benefits and salary range:

Applicants receiving benefits through the New York State Retirement System should review state regulations regarding post-retirement employment. This position is not eligible for employment under a Section 211 waiver

  1. Competitive starting salary in the range of $40,706 to $42,741 and is commensurate with qualifications

  2. A flexible work schedule is available upon successful completion of training. This position follows a hybrid model, with a combination of on-site and remote work.
