Professional Tutor - Sociology/Criminal Justice (PT)

Location: Canandaigua, NY

The Professional Tutor in Sociology/Criminal Justice is responsible for one-on-one and small group support for student learning. Tutors exhibit patience and a positive attitude in establishing an encouraging learning environment.

This is an hourly, part-time position.

Qualifications:

  1. Educational Background: Associate’s degree required, Bachelor’s or Master’s degree preferred.
  2. Experience: Working knowledge of Sociology through the Associates degree and introductory coursework in criminal justice required; Experience in teaching/tutoring at high school or college level strongly preferred.

Essential Functions:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and competence in subject matter of specialty area.
  2. Provide direct assistance to students individually or in small groups.
  3. Support students to develop and meet their academic goals.
  4. Tutor according to the techniques presented in student classes.
  5. Work comfortably with people from diverse backgrounds.
  6. Collaborate with immediate supervisor regarding best practices in tutoring.
  7. Participate in tutor training and development sessions as required.
  8. Maintain and record student and usage records as needed.
  9. Update tutoring materials including workshop development as needed.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned.

  1. Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time
  2. Ability to move office supplies
  3. May require flexible hours some evenings and weekends.
  4. Ability to use computer for extended periods of time.

Pay scale by degree attainment:

  • Associates Degree: $21.00/hour
  • Bachelors Degree: $23.00/hour
  • Masters or Ph.D: $25.00/hour
