Student Life Specialist - Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice (PT)

Location: Canandaigua, NY

The Student Life Specialist - Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice (DEISJ) is a crucial team member to the Finger Lakes Community College community and diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. Works to advance Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice efforts with the student life team, and as a collaborative partner with the Chief Diversity Officer, to integrate educational programs, trainings, and activities to enhance the academic and student experience. Special emphasis on underrepresented student populations awareness and support. Provides advisement, oversight, and guidance to designated diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice populations/student organizations, and other multicultural/special population student groups as they are created and formed. Shall serve as the advisor to AALANA/BIPOC and Active Minds student organizations. Hours are flexible to meet the needs of students, including some nights and weekend hours.

This is a part-time, grant-funded position.

Qualifications:

  1. Educational Background: Associate’s degree required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  2. Experience: One year experience working with students in a college setting (e.g., residential life, student government, campus activities, student clubs/organizations, etc.) required. Experience working with BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) and underrepresented student populations strongly desired. Preference given for graduate or professional experiences. Experience with large event planning (e.g., orientation) strongly desired.
  3. Special Skills: Strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills required. Must be able to work cooperatively with college departments and other entities in coordinating co- curricular programs. Have a strong background in social media, recruitment, and other promotion/marketing experience. Knowledgeable of student leadership development delivery methods, student development issues, experiential leadership, and awareness of the needs of traditional and non- traditional students, as well as strategies that promote student engagement, success, and completion.

Essential Functions:

  1. Activity Management:
    1. Advise/mentor designated diversity, equity, and inclusion student organizations and future student groups on main campus in consultation with the Director of Student Life.
    2. Assist with the implementation of a college-wide academic year student development and extended new orientation programs for emerging, transitional, underrepresented student populations and seasoned student leaders.
    3. Develop, coordinate, and implement a minimum of 10 programs per academic year focused on DEI programming including but not limited to social identity, intersectionality, privilege, and oppression, etc. Host additional programming that enhances students’ connection with the College and promote academic success and completion.
    4. Serve as the advisor to the AALANA/BIPOC and Active Minds student organizations.
    5. Attend regional and local trainings and conferences with student staff, when appropriate.
    6. Monitor website and office publications for effectiveness and efficiency including social media related to diversity, equity, and inclusion development programs on Bright Space. Ensure all media and marketing conforms to the College’s policies and procedures.
    7. Serves as a mentor and guide to the students in the co-curricular programs, with special attention given to underrepresented student populations.
  2. Additional Communication and Outreach:
    1. Contacts and advises incoming students, assists with first year orientation programs including running an extended orientation program and plans programming for the coming year during the months of June, July, and August.
    2. Participates in various recruiting, marketing, and informational activities for the college, such as new student orientation, open houses, spring visits, and other events at which the program should be represented.
    3. Articulates and presents leadership opportunities and programs to prospective students and their families, by preparing and publishing a descriptive outreach marketing plan, and directly communicates with all potential applicants.
  3. Assessment:
    1. Develop and maintain various aspects (i.e., database, assessments, learning outcomes and marketing, etc.) of the designed programs.
    2. Under the direction of the APCI office, support continual assessment effectiveness of diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts at FLCC specifically focused on the student experience.
  4. Other:
    1. Serves as an ex-officio member of the FLCC Student Corporation Board of Directors and may be invited on a weekly basis to the Student Corporation Executive Board to ensure collaboration and strong communication between the three areas.
    2. Manage the budget for programming in alignment with all College and/or Student Corporation Funding guidelines.
    3. Maintain and uphold the student-focused efforts connected to the FLCC DEI strategic plan and serve on campus committees when appropriate.
